Long, long ago on 8th April 2010, in the same month as Icelandic volcanic ash disrupted North Atlantic air travel and Deepwater Horizon exploded, I lost my job. It wasn’t newsworthy in the same way as a volcano erupting or an oil rig exploding, but it changed my life – For the better.
My last job wasn’t much of one but it came with a van, unlimited diesel, a phone, and a wage.
I had (and still have) a mortgage, and unemployment benefit wasn’t even going to cover food, heating, and electricity. I needed an income.
I was 57 years old and over-educated for every job I could find. This was Ireland still in the depths of the 2008 Depression.
I decided I could write; after all, I wrote millions of words as a teacher, and I knew that my English was better than 95% of what I was reading online.
My Come Back
I found a site that gave writers a percentage of advertising revenue and I earned a few dollars.
More important though was the writers’ forum.
My Support System
Everyone on the forum was supportive and helpful, always willing to share everything they knew. I learned a lot, including some new ways of thinking.
I wrote on the site for a few years but never earned much directly. However, I did make contacts that gave me €100,000 worth of work over the next three years.
I still write but have moved on to become a blogger, copywriter and entrepreneur.
